Re: My previous post
It is not you I will be kicking in the nuts; it is CompUSA.
I'm very sorry. Please forgive me.
Boom shanka,
Me
Translation: Swapping out the DVD drive for the old CD-ROM drive confirms it: my DVD drive is dead after a little over a month. Sumbitch!
I learned something that should have been common sense and am now whacking myself with a Clue-By-Four.
You see, folks, the DVD drive and the Zip drive were both on secondary IDE. The DVD drive, like the CD-ROM drive before it, was the master, and the Zip drive was the slave. Apparently, if the master h0rks, the slave doesn't know what to do and sits there like a lump. Which is exactly what happened. I figured the power supply was Big Evil, and with that broken wire, I might have been half right. I certainly didn't think a ~month-old DVD drive could be the culprit.
Well! Some tech I am, huh? Bleh.
I shall see if my mother can cart me to CompUSA tomorrow to raise hell for a replacement.
