I also have a scanner that hasn't even had the box opened, because I anticipated having to fart with the DVD drive for most of the evening to make it work. This turned out not to be the case, and now the scanner is sitting in the box on the couch because I've been too busy watching The Matrix and the X movie.
Seriously, this is the easiest upgrade that involved opening the case I've ever done. Once I got the fucking case off this box (I'll get to that in a minute), physical installation took all of sixty seconds.
But the case. Jesus, the case.
See, I have one of those weird cases. Where one side comes off very easily, the other side comes off ...sort of easily, and the front has to be pried off with a screwdriver. Most upgrades in the guts only require me to take the easily-opened side off. This one required me to pop all three off. Which, as I'd never done that to this machine before and had no idea how, turned out to be a comedy of errors.
Eventually, I got the other side of the case off, unscrewed the last screw, and attempted to slide the CD-ROM drive out the back of the bay. No, it was going to have to come out the front. But the front of the case had this lip, which hung over JUST ENOUGH to keep the damn thing in. A few more minutes of prying with a screwdriver got the front off, and the CD-ROM drive slid right out.
After that: three screws, three plugs, and one jumper, put case back together, plug in, install DVDshit.
The only other hitch: during installation of DVDshit, the installer asked for a serial number. I saw no serial numbers on any of the documentation, left it blank, and got bitched at. Finally, after ten minutes of swearing and bitching, I get fed up and eject the CD...upon which is printed...you guessed it...the serial number. Whichever genius thought that one up needs a LARTing.
But hey! It works! I have DVD! And it's all mine, because ex-Mate does not touch this box unless he wants to lose fingers. WHEE.
