(no subject)

Well, shit.

I was going to try and put D/LX on the box at home too, still keeping Win98 on as well, but I just can't seem to get more than 1.29GB free on this dinky 4G drive. D/LX wants at least a gig of it.

I shall have to ask Boss about purchasing one of the old 6G drives in the box way in the back.

But in the meantime, I shall gush about what I've played with so far on the machine at work.

I now have D/LX and WinXP coexisting peacefully on the same machine. Mostly because I got paranoid about how peacefully they would coexist on the same drive and dug up another old 6G drive out of the back for D/LX to live on.

Folks, I have never ever seen an easier OS installation.

If you are afraid of Linux, DON'T BE. Get D/LX. As I said on the TMBlog, it makes SuSE look like brain surgery. ANYONE with two functioning brain cells and opposable thumbs can install this shit, and you might even be able to get away without opposable thumbs. I think it took longer to get the drives jumpered right (because the lights are funky up front lately and I couldn't see what the hell I was doing, and I really didn't want to have to pull the 20G drive out just to set a jumper) than it took to actually install and set up D/LX. It found the network and subsequently our DSL all by itself, for which it gets a cookie; I had to configure fuckall in that department. Sound, video, CD burner, and all are working as advertised with zero tweaking on my part. Half an hour, maybe, after I rooted the old hard drive up out of the back, I was merrily gushing all over the TMBlog from Mozilla.

But the best part...oh, the very best part of all...

While it's installing, as it's copying the files...

It lets you play Solitaire to pass the time while it's installing.

This is, without question, the coolest fucking thing I have ever seen. Yes, I am easily amused, I know.
