I've started on one of these. The merman, specifically. I've got the tail, the body base, and the head base done; tomorrow, I'll put the skin on the head and body and probably get all that put together. If I'm feeling ambitious, I'll do the arms too.

I reduced the pattern gifs to 75 percent so they'd fit on regular paper. Bear this in mind.

To give you some idea how big he is: the tail alone, not counting the caudal fin, is about a foot and a half long. He'll probably end up about two and a half feet long, from top of head to tip of fin.

I'm going to have to yank the stuffing out of the tail and restuff it--I overdid it a bit. Fortunately, it's not attached yet. The tail fabric came from the bundle of fat quarters I picked up the other day--sort of shimmery stuff, blue, with...well, I want to say a tie-dye sort of pattern, but that's not quite right. I'll scan a scrap of it tomorrow. I dug up some pale blue tulle out of the closet and used that for the fins. I have the ear fins cut out, but I'm debating whether or not to put them on, mainly because I'm planning on using unravelled Homespun for hair, and they'll just get buried in it.

So far, it's a lot easier than I expected. The hands are going to be pretty fiddly, and I figure I'll just hand-sew them instead of farting with the machine, and I had a little difficulty sticking the nose bone in the face (note to self: next time, do this before you stuff, the instructions lie), but overall, I think it's going to turn out pretty good for a first try.
