To the Chronicle
May. 6th, 2002 11:29 amAfter reading Michelle Malkin's latest torrent of vitriol
[http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/editorial/1396624] and getting
the same good laugh from her ignorance as I always have, something
occurred to me.
In the online world, there are people who take great pleasure in going
to various fora and posting inflammatory nonsense for the sole purpose
of stirring the fertilizer. And then, while the rest of the world takes
up verbal arms and steps to one side or the other to defend or destroy
their platform, the instigator sits back and laughs.
There is a name for people like this: trolls.
Trolls spew their garbage for the sole purpose of ruffling feathers and
seeing who'll spew back. They don't truly believe what they're saying.
They're just overgrown 10-year-olds out for a few laughs, however cheap,
with no regard for the people they may genuinely offend.
Fortunately, there is one sure-fire method of making a troll go away:
ignore him/her/it. Trolls feed on attention. If they don't get it from
one source, they'll move on to another.
In the unlikely event that Ms. Malkin /does/ actually believe the
hate-fests she spews, I would say she is in serious need of
hospitalization and treatment for her mental problems. But I don't think
she does. Like the ubiquitous 'net troll, she's only out to see how many
people she can stir up into a frenzy. Chronicle readers: keep writing
rebuttals to her diatribes and she'll keep writing. Ignore her, and
she'll go away.
