It's not exactly a gyro, but it was as close as I could get with what I could get at Kroger's.
Flat bread, which they peddle in the bakery department
Onion
Chicken (preferably boneless breast)
Caesar Italian salad dressing
Olive oil
Feta cheese
Plain yogurt
Cucumber
Garlic
Green Leafies (I used raw spinach)
Cut chicken into relatively bite-sized bits (I have to yank that tendon thingy out of the tenders; I can't stand the thought of biting into it later, even if it /does/ disappear when you cook it, and besides, it's hard as hell to cut through), put in a bowl, douse thoroughly with salad dressing, cover and put in fridge for at least an hour. Overnight is even better.
Meanwhile, make the sauce. Mash up a clove of garlic with some salt and olive oil. Chop up a little bit of cucumber, toss that with the garlic-n-oil. Add a half-cup or so of plain yogurt. Tinker with salt, etc. till you like it. I threw in a little of that salad dressing too. Let it sit for a while so it doesn't just taste like plain yogurt with cucumbers floating around in it.
Chop up as much onion as you want. Pour some olive oil into a pan and heat it up. Toss in the onions and then the chicken, salad dressing and all; cook till chicken is just done (not rubbery).
Lay a piece of flat bread on a plate. Cover with a thin layer, like one leaf deep, of Green Leafies. Sprinkle with feta cheese (and olives and tomatoes, if you like them). Spoon on some chicken-and-onions. Add some yogurt sauce, maybe a squirt of that salad dressing too. Fold in half, eat like taco. Good hot or cold.
