Today's hands-on experience lesson:
Jan. 18th, 2002 03:44 pmThe problem: After the user removed some old RAM from the computer, it beeps funkily on power-on and then yields nothing but a black screen. What's up with that?
In this particular box, the clippythings that hold the RAM in (pardon my lack of a technical term) were right next to the end of the video card. When the user yanked the RAM out, she accidentally knocked the video card partially out of the slot, thus the beeps and the black screen.
Anyone could have done this, as close as the two were situated. Anyone. Even with my little Barbie hands, I came dangerously close to doing the exact same thing.
Moral of the story: If your computer fails to work properly after you remove or install something, poke anything you might have touched to make sure it's seated properly.
