About four years ago I made a bracelet. A 16g stainless steel half Persian bracelet, to be precise. Since I made it, I've taken it off... maybe three times.
Sometime around lunch today, I noticed that it was not on my wrist. And I remember getting it caught on the plastic bag my daily drinks were in when I made my morning Stop-N-Rob pit stop. I remember pulling it off the bag and checking the clasp to make sure it was good and would not come loose. It's done that maybe five times.
It's not in the tech room. It's not in the front office. It's not in the kitchen or the bathroom. It's not in the parking lot. It is somewhere between here and work, and has probably run off to Tahiti with my damn True Lightning Rune by now.
I FEEL NAKED.
It wasn't anything particularly special--like I said, it was just steel, and even though I haven't made Piece One of maille in about three years, I still have plenty of 16g stainless wire, more than enough to make a replacement. Except I'm going to have to relearn half Persian. I can still do 4-in-1 and 6-in-1 and Japanese, but half Persian I could not do right now if my life depended on it. So not only am I going to have to find the instructions again, I'm going to have to find the good instructions. Because when I first learned this shit, there were two sets of instructions I found. One was really, really good, and that's what finally turned the light on for me. The other was horrible, and I made maybe an inch of chain before I threw my hands up in disgust.
Also, I'm going to have to find all my vise-grips and pliers and mandrels and bolt cutters and shit again, and that really sucks.
